Metta Meditations for May, with Vista Yoga

Metta Meditation is a loving-kindness meditation. We practice first with ourselves and then move on to others we love, others with whom we may have a difficult relationship, and then the wider world. It’s important that we remember these short meditative phrases on loving-kindness (e.g., may I be free from harm; may I know peace) begin with turning toward ourselves. We practice this soft, compassionate orientation, and then take it into wider circles, and we might need to practice for weeks or months, with just one person, or with just ourself. The repetition, the wording, the various lenses we can take with a loving-kindness meditation, all offer the opportunity to turn toward ourself, and examine our own ways of carrying ignorance and misperception in our daily lives.
