A Naming Meditation Practice

Naming that which takes you away from the breath…

A practice in mindfulness meditation

In this short video, I offer a meditation practice that includes naming that which draws our attention, whether it be physical sensation or inner stories we tell ourselves. This technique, common in mindfulness meditation traditions and discussed at length by meditation teachers such as Pema Chodron and Sarah Powers, can be useful as a way of cultivating equanimity toward ourselves: our own emotions, fears, story-telling, attachments. The more we practice equanimity when we’re faced with our own patterns, the less likely we are to attach our self-worth to these external aspects. We take an inner gaze, with compassion and loving-kindness, and come to abide with our true self. We offer this practice with love.
